Teaching Methods
Teaching is an art in its self. This is one of the key messages of this course! We employ the following teaching methods in order to achieve all of our different learning objectives.
Direct Instruction
Typical teaching of martial arts by demonstration and explanation.
Practise
You will be asked to practise what you have been taught in order to improve. You will be told clearly what you need to practise and what outcomes are expected.
Theory training
Theory of martial arts, teaching, business, personal organisation etc. Taught through small group seminars.
Teaching practise
Teaching practise will form an essential part of the instructor training
course. You will have opportunities to teach real classes under the
supervision of a more experienced instructor. This is the only successful
way to learn to teach.
Assignments
Reading assignments: students will be given a list of books etc
to study. Group discussions will follow.
Practical assignments: a reasonable number of assignments will be
set. These will involve completing a straightforward and relevant
task such as preparing and implementing marketing campaigns, canvassing for students, writing articles working with the internet etc.
Qualifications / Grades Attained
Instructor Qualifications:
1) Nam Yang Probationary Instructor Level 1 Certificate. This qualifies an
instructor to teach on behalf of Nam Yang in any country. The certificate
will be upgraded to a full Level 1 instructor after one year’s successful
teaching and a short refresher course and test. Subsequent to this, an
instructor can gradually progress through the instructor grades.
2) BCCMA level 2 coach’s certificate. This qualifies the bearer as a sports
coach able to teach in the UK, recognised by the sporting authorities. At
present Iain Armstrong is able to deliver the training and assessment
required to gain this qualification in Thailand. Should circumstances
change, a trip to the UK may be necessary to gain the certificate.
Martial Arts Grades
Full time students are expected to progress through the grading syllabus at
two to three times the rate of part time students. This means that students
starting ‘˜from scratch’ may reasonably expect to reach at least grade 11 (the Si
Muen Tow Tuay routine) after two years, students who have already begun
progressing through the grading system may expect to make the equivalent
progress to at least four years of ‘normal training’, (so someone who had
already achieved grade 11 could reasonably expect to reach grade 16 (Ti Goo
Lip Chiok).
Pass / Fail Criteria
It is essential to realise that passing the course is not automatic, i.e. if you do
not achieve the required standards, you will not pass. Students who follow
their instructions, learn the material, complete the training required and retain
their motivation should have no problem passing. It is expected that the vast
majority of people who complete the course – over 95% will pass, but that
they will have to put in some hard work to do so!
Students will be given a brief report at each half term summarising their
progress. In the event that they are not on track to pass they will be told
exactly why and what they need to do to redress the situation.
FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY
After successful completion of the first two terms’ training, you will be
offered a Nam Yang Franchise and the training which goes with it. This is
intended for those who wish to run their own martial arts school rather than
work for an existing school.
The franchise is an agreement enabling someone to set up their own Nam
Yang school and use the Nam Yang logos, brand, etc, to receive ongoing
support and consultation and to be supplied with Nam Yang branded goods
for sale. Full details will be available upon being offered a franchise.
Franchisee training teaches how to set up and run a martial arts business
successfully and covers, amongst other things:
- Course planning and delivery.
- Cash flow / budgeting.
- Marketing.
- Target setting: eg signings, merchandise sales, course sales.
- Accounting, bookkeeping, banking.
- Decor / layout of school.
- Employment law / Job descriptions.
- Relationship with NEST.
- Systems.
Franchisee training will be delivered during daytime on normal training days.
It will not make the course any longer and is separate from all other training.
Franchise training will not incur any extra cost and on successful completion of the course, you will be offered your first Nam Yang franchise. You will not be charged for this, although if you want legal documentation, you will need to cover any costs incurred in it’s supply.
Food and Accommodation
Meals and rooms will be supplied as described elsewhere on this web site. Room service will be economy level. Trainee instructors are housed two to a room. Men and women will not
be made to share but may request to do so if they wish. It will be possible
to keep the same room for the duration of the instructor course. Outside of
term time, it will be necessary to vacate rooms but we will provide secure
storage. It will be possible to reserve a private room, in which case a
surcharge will be incurred – please enquire.
Visas
We will supply the necessary documentation for you to apply for a student visa in your country of origin. This visa allows you multiple entries into Thailand. It needs to be renewed each year.
Behaviour / Ethos
Trainee instructors are expected to exemplify the behaviour expected of a martial artist. This means adhering to the Nam Yang code of conduct, etiquette etc.
How to get started
Use the contact form to let us know roughly when you would like to begin. We will send you a registration form. It’s as simple as that! If you need further information, we will be happy to supply it.
